Topic of the Day: New Bill Calls for Ethnic Studies to Cease

13 On Your Side wants to know your thoughts:

The latest legislation from Arizona is looking to expand a ban on Ethnic Studies to include colleges and universities. The state currently has a ban on schools K-12 forbidding them from teaching any courses that focus on one individual group.

SB 2120 Author Bob Thorpe R- Flagstaff believes that such classes promote hate and shouldn’t be taught in public schools. If passed the bill would give the state’s attorney general the authority to withhold funding from schools who violate the law.

Educators on the other hand argue that Ethnic Studies courses are focused on educating students on a particular groups struggle and in turn empower students. Federally mandated courses and any Native American activities are exempt from the present law.

Are Ethnic Studies courses divisive or empowering?
