Police discover stolen property at Calexico storage locker
Calexico police discovered thousands of dollars of alleged stolen property when responding to a car burglary on Saturday morning at the Calexico Portico Self-Storage complex. “Several storage lockers had been burglarized along with a vehicle that was on the property,” Calexico Police officer Miguel Carbajal said.
Police recognized Calexico resident Raul Mejia from surveillance video. “During the investigation we were able to identify a vehicle and a suspect that was involved in the crime,” Carbajal said.
Seven lockers had been allegedly burglarized at the storage complex by Mejia and two other unidentified men. “We learned that several of those storage lockers on the same property had been burglarized,” Carbajal said.
Mejia’s arrest at a local motel helped police find the alleged stolen property. Some of it was found at the motel room and more in two storage lockers Mejia had at Portico Self-Storage. “He had two storage lockers in the same location he burglarized,” Carbajal said.
Victims ranged from locker tenants to commercial businesses. “The loss is definitely in the thousands of dollars. At this point we still haven’t spoken to all the victims, but the victims we have spoken to we’ve collected their information and got a list of things that were taken from those lockers,” Carbajal said.
Police said they also recovered a handgun and a sawed-off shotgun. Mejia is currently free on bail. The investigation is on-going.
