El Centro family loses deceased child’s funds in robbery
A family was robbed and lost the money they planned to use to bury their 2-month-old child.
Daveena Erunez, says her purse was stolen from inside her car outside their doorstep in El Centro last Wednesday.
The bag had over $3,000 in cash, gift cards and gas cards that were worth over $500 inside. They also stole personal documentation like their social security cards, according to Erunez.
The couple recently had twins. The children were born August 11th at only 28 weeks and unfortunately the boy died later that month.
The parents say the cash stolen was money that came from their son’s life insurance which they were going to use to buy his headstone.
The other child, who is a girl, is still under intensive care at the Rady’s Children Hospital in San Diego. They travel to San Diego daily, which is why Erunez says she carried all those belongings with her.
“I don’t know why in my mind I was like if I carry everything with me everything will go much smoother but apparently that was not the route to go. It’s always better to be safe than sorry,” said Erunez.
The couple says the company Erunez works for came up with the money to help them pay for their son’s funeral, now they say they will start from zero to bring up the money for his headstone.
