Topic of the Day: Fighting Opioid Addiction

According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine opioid addiction is at an all time high; according to their findings, accidental overdoses are the leading cause of death in the U.S.
Now, Governor Doug Ducey is stepping in hoping a new executive order may curve those numbers in Arizona. Earlier this week Ducey announced that prescription opioids like oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, fentanyl and others will be reduced to state employees and those served by Medicaid and the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS).
That will translate to patients being given a smaller initial dosage and stricter guidelines on who gets additional refills; now this will not affect those suffering from chronic illnesses, cancer or those who have suffered a traumatic injury.
