Prop 408 asks to rezone 7-acres in Yuma

Yuma residents will soon be deciding whether or not to rezone a plot of land located on the northwest corner of 24th Street and Avenue 9E.

The 7-acre plot developers seek to expand housing options in Yuma with a new upscale apartment complex, The Saguaro Apartments.

“The Saguaro Apartments will have a positive impact on the community, and provide a much needed resource for the citizens of Yuma. This type of housing is presently unavailable and there is a strong demand. The project consists of 84 high-end, upscale apartments, with amenities, that will maximize the view of the valley,” according to Brian Hall, the owner and developer of the plot.

The developer says they will provide an alternative housing choice for professionals, military personnel, contractors, teachers, retirees, and others who do not want the burdens of home ownership.

However, residents and others against Proposition 408 say they’d like to keep the lot zoned for agriculture use. They say they’re worried about an increase in traffic and crime. Other residents say they’re concerned about pets contaminating nearby agriculture fields.

Some residents say they’d want the developer to take on the responsibility of improving and widening the roads if the project were realized.

Yuma residents will make the decision on November 8th.

A “Yes” vote, “shall have the effect of approving Ordinance O2016-006 and rezoning the northwest corner of 24th Street and Avenue 9E from the Agriculture (AG) District to Medium Density Residential (R-2) District, and amending the zoning map.

A “No” vote, “shall have the effect of rejecting Ordinance O2016-006, and retaining the Agriculture (AG) District Zoning on property located at the northwest corner of 24th Street and Avenue 9E.
