Arizona Representatives to return to work
Bill protecting businesses from coronavirus-related lawsuit tops agenda
PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Members of the Arizona House of Representatives plan to return to work this week after a two-month recess triggered by coronavirus.
A top priority for the Republican majority is passing a bill shielding businesses from coronavirus-related lawsuits brought by employees and customers who may contract the illness. House Republicans, and Governor Doug Ducey, say the measure is needed to prevent frivolous lawsuits in the wake of the outbreak. They say such litigation could further injure the businesses hurt most by the virus.
House Democrats oppose the measure. They also oppose most of the dozens of other bills Republicans plan to bring to the floor. They favored recessing in the wake of the pandemic, like their counterparts in the Senate.
At this point, senators don't plan to return to the capitol until the start of the next legislative session. However, floor sessions in the House could start as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday.
