Three out of twelve candidates speak about why they are running for city council
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - On Wednesday, we highlighted three candidates running and re-running for a seat at the Calexico City Council.
We are highlighting three candidates Diana Nuricumbo, Lorenzo Calderon and Lisa Tylenda, who is an appointed incumbent running for a partial term.
"Calexico has been going through the same issue for many years...I lived in Calexico for over 35 years and it's always the same thing...so after I saw new people coming in I was very enthusiastic about it," Nuricumbo said.
"The reason I decided to run is because I have all this actual experience working in municipalities and I know our city should be If not one of the best cities in the valley...the best city in the valley...nothing to take away from the other cities but we are a border city," Tylenda expressed.
Tylenda and Nuricumbo are working as a team as they are both running for a two-year-term.
Tylenda was appointed to the city council in April after the recall election. She says for the past months she has been on the council, and they have worked on building a better city by working with law enforcement and schools.Â
Nuricumbo served in the military and has been a businesswoman for 20 years. She says after the recall she was inspired to run for city council.Â
Lorenzo Calderon Jr. is born and raised in Calexico and is running for the first time. He is a retired correctional administrator and is now on the Calexico Unified School District Board.
"What I would like to change is first of all, clean Calexico. Not only the downtown, but also the community...in force ordinances to keep our city clean," Calderon shared.
KYMA was not able to reach out to Calexico Mayor Camilo Garcia and Councilmember Javier Moreno, who are running for re-election.
