Imperial Valley feeling nationwide healthcare shortages

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Imperial Valley College (IVC) is trying to assist with the nationwide shortage of healthcare staff, like nurses.

Superintendent Dr. Lennor Johnson says the community college is trying to help with this nationwide issue by expanding its nursing program.

The nursing department at IVC is made to help students prepare for a career in the healthcare industry.

Students will have access to live simulations like in an emergency room for the first time.

Cristal Mora is the assistant nursing director at IVC and said this will help take their skills to the next level.

"Students are able to practice their skills, are able to do assessments, and it is a more conducive learning environment, something that has been so long awaited," she said.

El Centro Regional Medical Center said its staff was hit hard during COVID-19.

VO Medical Center in Calexico also explained it is short-staffed when it comes to nurses.

IVC is confident this program will help with the nursing shortage across the Imperial Valley.
