Prices for food continue to rise

(KYMA, KECY/CNN) - If prices at the grocery store are making you lose your appetite, you're not alone.

Food prices shot up 11.4 percent over the past year -- the biggest increase since *19-79.

Everything from eggs, flour, milk, and meat costs more now.

Economists say it's not just because of inflation -- which is actually slowing down.

Food prices are affected by global events -- like the war in Ukraine -- which affects the costs of wheat and other things we buy.

Then you've got natural disasters to consider -- like droughts that have killed crops -- and the flu which has hit the supply of eggs and turkeys.

And demand for food isn't flexible.

You can skip putting on a new outfit or a vacation -- but you can't stop buying food.
