VIDEO: US airlines customers complaints increase

(NBC) - The number of customer complaints concerning U.S. airlines more than doubled in the first half of the year.

If you have had problems negotiating the nation's airports this year, you are certainly not alone.

Federal aviation data shows the number of customer complaints more than doubled in the first half of the year compared to 2021, rising from 6,827 to 15,955 during the same time period.

5,569 of those complaints related specifically to flight problems.

The latest numbers show Allegiant Air had the worst on-time rate from January to June at just 61.63%.

Among carriers, American Airlines fell to a 75.33%, United was at 77.38% and Delta was just over 81% in on-time rates during the same time period.

All this comes as the demand for air service jumped dramatically as the country began to emerge from the pandemic and airlines sought to meet demand but encountered staffing shortages and reported weather issues.

The transportation department is set to introduce a new tool that lays out "the services or amenities that each of the large U.S. airlines provide" when passengers are impacted by flight delays or cancellations due to factors within the carriers' control.

That new airline customer service dashboard is being rolled out by the department of transportation today.
