Gun control framework created, shows a probable bill passage
(KYMA, KECY/ NBC News) - The U.S. could soon get its first major gun safety law in years as senators have created a bipartisan framework for it.
It appears to have enough votes to pass the Senate -- perhaps within weeks, but the path forward is still up in the air.
Senators who support the new framework say they're hopeful a bill created from it could pass. It addresses issues like mental health, school safety and illegal gun purchases.
Ten Republican Senators say they support it -- and that's enough to override a filibuster.
In related news Monday, the Attorney General is set to speak about law enforcement action related to violent crime and illegal gun trafficking.
And, as soon as Monday the U.S. Supreme Court could issue a ruling on constitutional challenges to gun safety laws.
