Yuma County brings election experience to students

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma County Election Services visited Gila Ridge High School, presenting an election experience to students.

This is in collaboration with the Yuma Union High School District as the focus is on getting students excited to vote once they are eligible.

"It really gives students a chance to experience this before they go and do the actual thing for city elections, state elections, federal elections," Student Council Advisor Stephanie Stone spoke.

The county says teaching them how to vote early on could increase the area's generally low voter turnout.

Three members on the student council spoke about what this election experience means to students in the class.

"I thought it was really cool. I really like that we kind of got more involved with the Yuma community, and not just as Yuma Union High School District. Giving the high schoolers more of a real life experience of how voting is," explained Senior Student Body President Jenoah Armijo.

"I feel like this is really good for practice. Getting to actually come to a place and seeing all the machines, it's a lot better than having to do it on a Google Doc," said Junior Student Body Treasurer Sophia Corona.

"This gives everyone a chance to vote. I feel like when you do it on a Google form, not a lot of people go on it or forget about it. So this way, everyone in the school will come and vote," Junior Student Body Vice President Rebeca Flores spoke.

With the second year in the books, Yuma County and the YUHSD hope to continue their partnership for many years to come.

The Election Service office also visited Cibola and San Luis and they plan on visiting Kofa on Monday, April 25.
