Yuma County Administrator announces retirement
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Susan K. Thorpe, Yuma County Administrator, shares her retirement completing over six years with Yuma County and 38 years of public service.
Thorpe sent a formal letter of her retirement to the Yuma County Board of Supervisors on March 9.
Her last day will be June 6, 2022.
”It has been my pleasure to serve with each of you, as well as all other County elected officials, appointed directors and employees of this County,” Thorpe wrote in a letter to the Yuma County Board of Supervisors. “Together we have accomplished a great deal and we will continue to anticipate and address the needs of our community with integrity, commitment and dedicated service.”
She started her role with Yuma County in Feb. 2016 and is accountable for the organization of over 1,400 assigned positions and a budget of $460,677,786.
Some of her major accomplishments as a Yuma County Administrator include securing the County's financial position, enforcing long-range financial forecasting and creating strong fund balance policies.
“Susan is a smart, respected leader who has made a lasting and positive impact on Yuma County,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Tony Reyes said. “She has moved the County forward through her hard work and diligence, commitment to sound fiscal management, and dedication to strengthening the Yuma County organization.”
Thorpe started her public service career in Odessa, Texas in 1983 as a Budget and Research Manager.
When she began in Yuma County in 2016 after being chosen in nationwide recruitment for the position.
“I have enjoyed the leadership challenges and opportunities that Yuma County has provided to me, and I believe the executive team is well-positioned to continue to move the County forward to an even brighter future,” Thorpe said.
According to Reyes, the Board is immediately starting to consider how to fill the vacancy in the short and long term.
The Board is set to discuss and create a smooth transition plan for the recruitment process for a replacement.
