Body cam video shows dramatic rescue of stranded Arizona base jumper
Man left dangling by his parachute hundreds of feet in the air
APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - An Arizona Aviation team rescues a base jumper dangling hundreds of feet in the air. Now newly released body cam video shows exactly how they did it.
The base jumper's parachute got caught on the north side of Siphon Draw - a steep canyon in the Superstition Mountains.
"When we located the jumper on the side of the cliff... you're talking about a thousand foot sheer cliff and this is an area where they commonly jump in that area. he was probably 267-feet 300-feet down and just hanging on a rock with that shoot just dangling." said one rescuer.
Once they located the jumper, they needed to strategize.
"We were able to see his parachute from a little ways away and started to develop a plan. We knew we were going to be on the upper end of our cable length and everything. So we did some extra plan in addition to establishing and setting up for a ground base rescue started relaying information to the ground teams on what they were going to need if we did a ground base." said Russ Dodge with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Rescuers cut the man free of his parachute, then carried him to the top of the cliff.
"Once we had him and had him secured... we made the decision to put him on the top of the edge. At that point they can disconnect from the device. The helicopter can land and we can safely load everyone inside of the helicopter and not risk having some kind of fall or some kind of mishap while transitioning inside the aircraft. It's just safer overall."
The jumper wasn't injured during his ordeal.
