ACLU fights YUHSD ID practice
It’s a story News 11 first broke to you last October of the Yuma Union High School District asking parents of students to show proof of residency by providing an Arizona-issued ID.
Now, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) are jumping on board to fight for the rights of these students.
“Schools should not be asking about immigration status, that is not the enrollment practice,” said Marcella Taracena, a spokesperson with ACLU.
The Arizona Department of Education became involved in this specific case. They provided schools districts across the state of Arizona with the set guidelines to reinforce their stance on the topic.
“They sent out newly revised guidelines to all of their schools, so they are taking this opportunity to remind schools about what they can and cannot ask from students,” said Taracena.
At this point, Taracena confirms that the case has not hit the legal process and until now, News 11 has not received an official statement from YUHSD regarding this practice at this moment. However, we have confirmed that six students have been withdrawn from San Luis High School when this story was first reported.
