AZ Utility: Really wet summer follows very dry winter

PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) - The Salt River Project (SRP) reports Wednesday the second-wettest summer followed the second-driest winter since the utility company began keeping track almost 110 years ago.

Established in 1903, the SRP is made up of the Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement & Power District and Salt River Valley Water Users' Association.

And despite western drought conditions, 2021 monsoon weather has brought nearly 250,000 acre-feet of inflow into SRP's reservoirs on the Salt and Verde rivers during July and August.

According to the SRP, this summer's weather was just short of being the all-time wettest on record.

SRP officials clarify that an acre-foot of water is enough to cover an acre with one foot of water.

They say that’s about 325,000 gallons, or enough to meet the average demand of about three households in metro Phoenix for a year.
