Mayor of San Luis acknowledges need for border troops
With President Donald Trump’s recent promise to send nearly 15,000 troops to the southern border, the mayor in San Luis said Border Patrol has been lacking agents for many years and could use the resources. But he wants to make sure they’re used for what’s needed, like legal immigration.
Since the San Luis annex building opened, there has not been enough officers to man the booths for pedestrians who are legally crossing, according to Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. “Why not work on that,” Sanchez said.
Last week Mayor Sanchez met Homeland Security Secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen. Sanchez said there were no details or information about troops at that point. However, he is still limited on information about the recent announcement to send more troops.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been in communication with the city of San Luis. It has been confirmed that troops will be stationed at Fort Huachuca and Davis Monthan near Tucson, Ariz.
