Ten arrests and more than 319 pounds of marijuana seized by CBP
A seizure of more than 319 pounds of marijuana, a loaded shotgun, followed by ten arrests were made by Border Patrol agents over the weekend, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
An immigration inspection was conducted on a GMC truck traveling southbound on State Route 83 but then accelerated to a high rate of speed for several miles and crashed on State Route 82 near the Patagonia Lake entrance Friday morning, according to CBP.
CBP said agents and the Patagonia Marshals saw several people run from the crash site.
A 29-year-old U.S. citizen was arrested for human smuggling, and the eight illegally present Guatemalan and Mexican nationals, aged 17 to 38, were arrested for immigration violations, according to CBP.
Six of the nine people were taken to a local area hospital for medical evaluation and released.
The second incident happened Sunday afternoon when agents tried to stop a driver of an F-250 hauling a boat for immigration inspection.
Instead of stopping, the driver fled northbound on SR 83 and when the driver finally stopped agents discovered a loaded shotgun within arm’s reach.
Within the vehicle, agents found 14 bundles of marijuana.
The marijuana weighed more than 319 pounds and is valued at $119,625.
The driver was arrested on federal drug smuggling charges, and the vehicles were seized.
