Arizona Western College to host suicide prevention and awareness training

September is National Suicide Prevention month and to spread awareness, the Health and Wellness Department at Arizona Western College is hosting a “QPR” Suicide Awareness and Prevention training.

The training is open to the public and will take place on Thursday, September 20 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Frances Morris Boardroom.

The free training will be lead by a representative from the Simpatico group in Tucson and is intended to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by “questioning, persuading, and referring”.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States; which is why AWC believes awareness and prevention are very important.

AWC believes that it is important for college-aged students to be involved in the discussion of mental health, and they hope that bringing the training to campus will encourage a large attendance.

The training is not only meant for people who struggle with mental health issues but also for people who want to know how to help family or friends who struggle.

To reserve a spot for the training, you can contact AWC’s student health and wellness coordinator Christine Rouff, at (928) 317-7602 or (928) 317-6067.
