Local makes the Elite Desert Storm cheer squad
The newest member of the elite cheer team, The Desert Storm is a 12-year-old Yuma native.
“I’ve been around cheer my whole life,” expressed Jakkson Clark-Frye.
Growing up, he spent most of his time on the field playing flag football.
But, last year he decided to join Ron Watson’s cheer team. After one year of training, h e knew he was meant to be on the other side of the field.
“Cheer does make me happy, I am really familiar with it unlike other sports, I tried football for a lot of my life I just don’t like it,” said Jakkson .
Long before Jakkson made the team, he’d been his little brother’s very own cheerleader.
His little brother, Bruce, is fighting a battle with cancer. At 5-years-old he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Since then the family has been traveling to Phoenix for chemotherapy for the past three years.
“The last couple of years have been hard, they have been intense, but I will say we have kind of noticed that everything prepares us for something else, so it makes the drive a lot easier when you’re going up for something exciting versus chemo,”said Christine Clark, the mother of the two.
