Border Patrol arrests three convicted sex offenders
Since Oct. 1, 2020, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested and/or removed 26 individuals either convicted or wanted on sexual offense charges
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested three sex offenders over the weekend after illegally crossing into the U.S.
U.S. Border Patrol said the first sex offender was caught last Saturday around 4:45 a.m., approximately 3.5 miles from the Calexico Port of Entry. Video surveillance notified agents of two individuals illegally crossing.
Agents responded to the area and arrested both Mexican nationals. Additionally, record checks revealed a 33-year-old man was convicted in 2017 for rape/domestic violence out of Seattle, Washington. A judge sentenced him to 2 years in prison. The 33-year-old was removed from the U.S. in 2019.
The second incident happened 15 minutes later when agents were notified four individuals had entered 32 miles of the port of entry. Record checks revealed a 29-year-old Honduran national was found guilty in 2017 for sexual battery out of Alexandria, Louisiana. A judge sentenced him to eight months in prison before removing him from the U.S.
As for the third incident, Indio Border Patrol agents pulled over a black Mercedes SUV on Sunday evening after they suspected the vehicle was being used for human smuggling. When agents approached the driver, they found three undocumented immigrants inside the car. Record checks revealed one of the Mexican nationals was a 28-year-old man convicted in 2015 for a sex offense out of Washington County, Oregon.
A judge sentenced him to a year and a half in prison before he removed him in 2017.
Agents said all three convicted felons will remain in federal custody pending criminal prosecution.
