Imperial High School Student Arrested
Earlier today, the city of Imperial along with law enforcement and school officials, held a press conference about an arrest that was made last friday.
According to the press release, “Imperial Police Department Detectives dispatched to IHS Campus to interview witnesses and a potential suspect. After further investigation, Detectives determined the threat was valid, and one person was taken into custody. Karl Manaig; an eighteen year old senior at Imperial High school was arrested and charged with making criminal threats.”
School officials praised the students who had reported what they heard from Manaig to staff members, for their bravery and courage.
But many parents were still concerned for their child’s safety. One of them being, Julie Gray, who said “we need to be more vocal. We need to demand the safety of our students. We need to demand stricter access to our campuses. We need to drop our children to be dropped off at school and we need them to feel safe inside. And if they feel any less than that, it’s our job to advocate for them.”
Imperial’s Chief of Police, Leonard J. Barra, encouraged parents to take the time to speak to their kids, by saying that, “when you go home and see your kids, please talk to them. Tell them that they need to be involved and not be scared. Imperial is different from any other community in the valley. The reason why? They get involved, they step up. “
Because of students and staff members who did the right thing, this community doesn’t have to mourn for what could have been a tragedy.
