Derailment jury makes multi million dollar award
A jury awards a major settlement to victims of deadly derailment in Washington state.
Three people will split nearly $17-million for injuries they suffered during the 2017 crash in Pierce County.
Jurors awarded one passenger $8-million. The derailment left him with a traumatic brain injury.
They awarded a married couple the other $9-million. A rail car landed on the husband’s big rig and left him critically injured. His wife sued for damages tied to the toll his injuries took on their family.
The derailment killed three and injured dozens more.
The train was making its inaugural run from Tacoma to Portland, Oregon at the time of the accident.
Investigators say it was traveling at more than twice the speed limit when it hit a curve and derailed.
