Hands-on learning goes virtual at AWC

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - As classes at Arizona Western College (AWC) move online amid the coronavirus pandemic, one culinary class is making it work the best they can.

Stephanie Maggio is a Professor of Culinary Arts at the college where like many other professors, she had to create a whole new game plan for her curriculum when her class is centered around hands-on lessons.

Every week she has live classes online where the class gets to bake together. Maggio said that she was first worried people wouldn't actually tune in while she was trying to teach because they could easily learn on YouTube.

However, she realizes that the difference between her online classes and just watching a video on YouTube was that she was able to answer any questions her students had as she went along with her demonstrations.

Another way the classes have changed is that Maggio has been giving more quizzes then usual for a class that is is normally hands-on learning.
