School bus safety week raises awareness
The San Luis Police Department is helping to raise awareness on school bus safety around the community.
This week is National School Bus Safety week and police officials are offering tips to the public on ways they can practice school bus safety.
Students and parents are advised to stay on the sidewalk at bus stops, and as the bus is approaching don’t get close.
School bus drivers cannot see everything going on around the bus so it’s safe to say if you can’t see the driver, they can’t see you. Always try to stay in eye contact when in front of the bus to make sure the driver can see you to avoid accidents.
Those who are driving must stop when a school bus has it’s flashing lights on and stop sign activated. This signal means riders could be crossing the street so it’s important to be cautious.
Police officials want drivers to not be distracted when driving and always keep their eyes on the road.
