New initiative tackles mass shootings

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - With ongoing mass shootings in our country, Imperial County has adopted a new initiative to try and prevent something similar from happening in the Valley.

The Gun Violence Restraining Order program also known as GVRO will be supervised by Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Brooker.

The district attorney said the purpose of the new program is to take guns away from those who should not have possession of them.

“I am a big proponent of the second amendment, I believe it’s a constitutional right we have but there are certain people who show indication of being dangerous to the community. We have to keep in mind also that in this country there has been a wave of mass shootings at schools and other public places and that is in the back of everyone's minds," said George Marquez, Imperial County District Attorney.

The program has already started.

About 70 law enforcement agencies, including some in San Diego, are currently training for the program.
