Yuma Region Bicycle Coalition hosts YPD Bike Unit Fundraiser
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma Region Bicycle Coalition hosted the first Yuma Police Bicycle Unit Fundraiser early Saturday morning.
This is to help raise money to repair bikes for the Yuma Police Department's (YPD) Bicycle Unit. The fundraiser took place at FTS Automotive Center at 9:00am. There was a free car wash for those who stop by the auto center as well as free food and drink.
For one YPD officer, Christina Fernandez, she says this event can help strengthen public relations between police and the Yuma community.
"This event, to be able to raise these types of funds, are really important so that we can get the bike unit up and running, and be able to provide a service that allows us to be one-on-one with the community. You just don't get to have that face time when you're in your patrol car. When you're doing bike patrol, or when you're doing foot patrol, it allows is to be able to get to know our community," Hernandez explained.
Several YPD officers participated in washing people's cars.
In addition to YPD, the Yuma Young Marines and Crossroads Mission also lent a hand and sponsored the fundraiser. A check was presented to YPD after the event ended at noon.
If you missed out on the fundraiser, and would like to help out, you can two of the following options
- Drop off checks and donations to Barbara Rochester at Crossroads Mission.
