Planting trees for the future
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Trying to make a difference by planting one tree at a time. The City of Yuma and Arizona Public Service (APS) came together to grow the tree count in the community.
300 students from Gila Vista Junior High and McGraw Elementary joined together in an assembly where APS and the City of Yuma discussed careers and a need for arborists in the future.
The students then set out to different parts of the schools where they planted about 70 trees.
Getting the children involved is part of a 30-year plan to raise the tree count in Yuma County which is at a low 3.5 percent. This shortage presents a danger because trees provide benefits like cleaning the air, shade, and habitat for wildlife.
By having events at schools, kids can contribute to the growing numbers and get out and do their part.
