The results are in! IVL boys tennis recap
Boys tennis players from across the Imperial Valley now await CIF pairings at the end of this week
EL CENTRO, Calif ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - During the regular season, the Calexico boys tennis team emerged as the 2022 IVL Champions.
"It was the first time in nine years," Calexico head coach Hector Cota said. "Now we're just trying to carry that all through the IVL individual finals."
Last Tuesday and Wednesday the boys singles and doubles teams squared off in head to head competition for the opportunities to advance to the CIF San Diego Section playoffs. The top five singles and top five doubles teams would advance.
"I'm most excited for the results," Cota said. "These guys work hard, a lot of these kids have been through a lot. Tennis is something everybody finds an escape through so, we came together and rallied when it mattered."
The final results are as follows...
Singles:
1. Vincente Teran - Vincent Memorial
2. Luis Martinez - Vincent Memorial
3. Jacob Montesinos - Brawley
4. Aidan Casey - Brawley
5. Andres Rodriguez - Calexico
Doubles:
1. Jared Saldana and Gilberto Cruz - Brawley
2. Xavier Leos and Marco Trejo - Calexico
3. Iago Canchola and Adrian Montesinos - Brawley
4. Jason Oh and Talha Hussain - Central
5. Martin Nunez and Sergio Leos - Calexico
"Next we have a dead week due to spring break and then the singles will play," Brawley head coach Marcelo Rodriguez said. "Then doubles will play the week after that. To prepare for cid We just going to play as much live ball, match place style practice, just to keep these guys doing in a very similar way what they are doing here."
Throughout the IVL tournament is was not uncommon where teammates lined up against each other.
"We're feeling pretty good," Calexico doubles player Martin Nunez said. "We just won and it's like we're feeling good and accomplished."
Nunez and his partner Sergio Leos won fifth place but did it against their fellow teammates.
"It just sucks that we had to beat our fellow Calexico members," Leos said. "But, no hard feelings, gotta do what you gotta do."
Brawley's third place doubles team of Adrian Montesinos and Iago Canchola say mental toughness is more important than physical talent.
"There weren't anything that really got in our way," Montesinos said. "So we just pushed and came out with third place."
"I'd say 10 percent is your skill and 90 percent is mental so it's basically coming out with your best mind set," Canchola said.
The CIF seeding meeting takes place on Saturday, April 23rd with singles and doubles teams knowing their seeds and who they play in the late morning or early afternoon.
