Trial date set for man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO

NEW YORK CITY (NBC, KYMA) - A trial date is set for the federal trial for Luigi Mangione, the man accused in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson back in 2024.

Mangione will head to court January 25, 2027 for opening statements in his federal trial.

His attorneys, Karen Agniffilo and Marc Agniffilo, had no comment as they left his pretrial conference Monday, which was expected to focus on discovery, and how jurors would be screened.

Jury selection is now scheduled to begin January 5, 2027.

Monday's hearing came just days after sources told WNBC that Mangione's attorneys and federal prosecutors had been in talks for a plea agreement, but negotiations had since stalled.

Mangione's state trial is scheduled to begin on September 8. In the state case, Mangione faces nine felony charges, including second-degree murder.

In the federal case, he is charged with two counts of stalking.

He has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
