House of Representatives pass second Speaker vote

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NBC) - A second vote failed to produce a winner for Speaker of the House during the opening session of congress Tuesday.

This is the first time the house has gone to multiple ballots to elect a speaker in 100 years.

As with the first ballot, Republican leader Kevin McCarthy received support from an overwhelming majority of his GOP conference with 203 votes.

But, chances fell short of the 218 needed to win a simple majority of the 434 House members present.

19 Republicans once more voted for another candidate; this time, all votes went to congressman Jim Jordan.

Meanwhile, Democrats once again unanimously rallied behind the minority leader Hakeem Jeffries.
