Yuma discusses updates to the Desert Hills Golf Course

News 11's Reporter Melissa Zaremba tells us more about the potential upgrades

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY-TV) - The City of Yuma received over $100,000 from the Visit Arizona Tourism Initiative Grant to renovate Desert Hills Golf Course.

It’s no surprise with all this grass, golf courses can use a ton of water, so that’s why the City of Yuma is trying to find ways to reduce water usage. With the plan to update the Desert Hills Golf Course with a newer irrigation system.

“The network for the golf course is pushing 60 years old,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Jason Nau.

Parks and Recreation Director Jason Nau shares why this update is important.

“With an irrigation system as old as ours we actually experience a lot of water line breaks where there’s a lot of issues where water is wasted and not maximized,” said Nau.

The money will be used to test the grounds so the city can properly enhance the location.

“This study is going to help us use current modern technologies to ensure we can keep the golf course in premiere conditions while also being very mindful of our water consumption,” said Nau.

The plan to upgrade Desert Hills Golf Course is still being discussed and nothing official has been set yet.

If the project moves forward it could take about a couple of months before the new irrigation system to get updated.
