Keeping your children safe around water starts with proper barrier

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - As the summer months creep upon us spending time around the pool is a necessity. An Arizona law outlines how you can protect your children from a large body of water.

This law spells out some of the most important things.

The height of the fence, the width in between where a child cannot get thru the fence, and the latches and doors are also regulated in this law.

But the most important way to protect your children from water is to make sure they cannot get out to the backyard on their own.

Although, some pools have barriers, that might not always help with obstructing the body of water. Door and pool alarms are also added security.

“Kids are pretty smart, you know they figure this stuff out pretty good so I would probably suggest not only a pool barrier but if you have a chance maybe an alarm going out to the back door, because if you don't hear the child going out, the more time they're going to have to try to figure out a way to get to the water, something that attracts them into the water like a ball or a float or something like that,” said Shelley Ostrowski, Arizona REALTORS® Treasurer.

Another important safety reminder, which should go without saying, is to always watch children around water. They should always have someone supervising their every move.

Simple things to prevent a tragedy.
