Maricopa County deputy severely beaten by suspect on Saturday
PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The family of a Maricopa County sheriff's deputies has decided to remove him from life support.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) says Deputy Juan "Johnny" Ruiz was attacked by a suspect Saturday inside a sheriff's office substation. MCSO says Deputy Ruiz was processing multiple arrest warrants for 30-year-old Clinton Robert Hurley, when Hurley attacked him.
Deputies say Hurley beat Ruiz unconscious then stole his patrol car. They say the suspect drove through a fence, and abandoned the cruiser before carjacking another vehicle. MCSO says Hurley's escape attempt ended in a gunfight with a homeowner. The suspect's now hospitalized in stable condition as a result of that confrontation.
However, Deputy Ruiz would never regain consciousness. Monday morning his family decided to take him off life support, and donate his organs. Ruiz had been with MCSO for three years.
