Shuttle Commander and Senate candidate releases message for Yuma County graduates
Mark Kelly offers words of wisdom on surmounting challenge
TUCSON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Former Space Shuttle Commander and current Democratic Senate candidate Mark Kelly released a special message Monday evening for Yuma County's Class of 2020.
Kelly describes watching his mother surmount challenges while becoming the first female police officer in his home town. He then encourages graduates to look back on their accomplishments, then ahead to the future.
"I know this isn't the way you were hoping to celebrate your graduation, it's totally unexpected. But that doesn't change what you've accomplished, or what that diploma, that you earned, means to what you can do next." said Kelly.
"And it's because of smart, talented young people, like all of you, that I know Arizona is going to get through this hard time. I know it. And I look forward to seeing what you all do next."
Kelly is an astronaut, engineer, and U.S. Navy fighter pilot. He's currently running to represent Arizona in the U.S. Senate. Kelly is married to former Representative Gabbie Giffords.
