Body cam footage shows Arizona trooper shot
PHOENIX, Ariz. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - An Arizona trooper, shot during a traffic stop on Monday, is thankful to be recovering at home.
The body cam footage, released Friday, showed what happened after he got shot. The incident occurred during Monday morning, just before noon.
Arizona Trooper Sean Harkins stops the driver of a gray Kia near 21st Avenue and Thomas Road.
What was supposed to be a routine traffic stop turned violent in a matter of seconds.
The driver opens fire, hitting Harkins in the leg.
Aftermath
After Harkins hits the ground, he gets up, hobbling back to his patrol car. In a matter of seconds, help arrives and begins to apply a tourniquet to stop the blood loss.
During that time, the trooper was in and out of consciousness. Paramedics would rush Harkins to the hospital with a single gunshot wound.
Trooper Harkins is out of the hospital and recovering at home.
The driver who fired at him, 29-year-old Luis Mateo Jacobo Borja, was found dead from a gunshot wound after crashing into a wall.
Investigators say he also fired at Phoenix police officers who then returned fire.
