September is National Preparedness Month
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - From Sunday, September 11 to Saturday, September 17, the Yuma Fire Department (YFD) responded to 298 emergency calls.
Evidently, in a press release, the 298 call broke down to the following:
- 7 General fire
- 1 Mutual Aid
- 22 Motor Vehicle Crashes
- 250 Other Medical Emergencies (both serious and minor)
- 17 Special Duty, Public Assistance, and Residential Assignments
National Preparedness Month
Furthermore, according to the National Weather Service (NWS), September is National Preparedness Month.
Not only that, it is Monsoon Season, which doesn't officially end until September 30.
Equally important, the YFD wants everyone to keep in mind to always treat any downed power lines as live, do not touch them, and leave it to the professionals.
In addition, the common times for lines to be down would be during or after the storms.
Other signs of danger
Another key point, the YFD warns everyone to watch out for puddles and flowing water, and if the power is out while on the road, approach the intersection with caution.
Not only is it a good safety procedure, but it is also the law.
Lastly, the time to make our personal and family plans/preparations is BEFORE the emergency occurs. As the saying goes:
"Be prepared, not scared."
