YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - On Saturday, those involved with the Fraternal Order of Eagles, a charity organization in the Foothills, got together to make luminarias, a decorated paper bag with a candle inside.
Dottie priest is the one in charge of the event, she says each one is actually designed with a cancer victim in mind.
“To remember, support, or honor a person that was fighting cancer, lost their battle with cancer or celebrate their recovery,” Priest said.
The bags will actually be used to light up Desert Sun Stadium on April 30, when the annual Relay For Life with the American Cancer Society will be held.
As people walk next to the luminarias, they’ll do so reminded of those who fought the disease.
“They’ll see these bags and go 'oh my gosh, there’s Jose, there’s Mike, there’s Sandy, there’s, you know there’s just, family, friends, everybody’s been affected,” Priest said.
Priest says those who helped decorate have each been affected by cancer in some way, giving their help, just that much more meaning.
“They come in with a true heart, and know what this is about, because like I said, they’ve all been part of the cancer walk unfortunately and yeah, just good people here.”
