Facebook being told to investigate its role in the Capitol riot

(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - Facebook is being told to investigate its role in the January 6th Capitol insurrection, following the oversight board's decision to uphold the decision to suspend Donald Trump's Facebook page.

The recommendation came from the company's independent oversight board on Wednesday.

Outside of the board's decision to uphold former President Donald Trump's page suspension, there was another important aspect of the board's decision. One that recommends a deeper review of the role Facebook played in the spread of election conspiracy.

Those conspiracies in the board's words reads "exacerbated tensions that culminated in the violence in the United States on January 6th."

Facebook has attempted to distance itself from the idea that its platform played a role in the riot.
