Hundreds protest at Arizona State Capitol
Demonstrators demand Governor Doug Ducey re-open the state
PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Hundreds of cars circled the Arizona State Capitol Sunday to demand Governor Doug Ducey re-open the economy.
Drivers honked their horns, held signs, and waved American flags. All of them want Ducey to lift the stay-at-home order he issued on March 30 in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Experts say, if the state reopens too soon, it could see a second spike of cases. But protestors say the shutdown has already gone on too long.
"We are here to liberate Arizona. Governor Ducey, flip the switch" said protest organizer Bill Way.
Governor Ducey says it's not that simple.
"It's not a light switch you flip on and off it's more like allowing more oxygen in our economy and do it a way that is responsible." said Ducey.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases continues to rise in Arizona, as does the number of deaths. There is evidence social distancing is having an impact. Health officials say the curve appears to be flattening.
