Mr. B’s Bicycles gearing up for annual bike marathon
Saturday marks the Fourth Annual Mayors’ Binational Bicycle Ride.
It’s a 25-mile ride from Yuma to San Luis, Arizona that brings together cyclists across the county.
The mayors of each of Yuma County’s cities and tribes lead the way.
If you’re a cyclist in Yuma, chances are you’ve pedaled into Mr. B ‘s Bicycles, and may have met Donnie Bennett.
His family has owned the bike shop since 1977 and has shifted with the evolution of cycling.
Mr. B said, ” [Bicycles] are always changing. From road bikes to mountain bikes, comfort bikes, now the new electric bikes is what’s really popular. ”
Five years ago, Mr. B was diagnosed with a rare cancer, sick to the point where he could barely walk.
After overcoming the disease, he hopped back on his bike just in time for the First Annual Mayors’ Binational Bike Ride.
The route goes from the parking lot of the Civic Center. Down 32nd street, onto Avenue B and makes stops at the Cocopah Casino, Somerton , Gadsden, and finishes off the 25-mile trek in San Luis, Arizona
While prepping for the fourth annual event, Mr. B shared some safety tips for participants.
He said, ” One of the most important things that cyclists should have is a helmet. The brighter the better. ”
Cyclists should also thoroughly check their bikes, ” Make sure everything is tight. Your handlebars, your seats, your wheels. You want to make sure you have proper [tire] inflation. ”
Mr. B will supply bikes for all seven local public safety agencies for Saturday’s ride.
The event starts at 8 am at the Yuma Civic Center.
This year over 300 cyclists, adults and children, are expected to participate.
