Excessive Heat Warnings return to the Desert Southwest
The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued an Excessive Heat Warning in effect for Yuma, Kofa, and Gila River Valley starting on Tuesday, June 11 from 10:00 a.m. until Wednesday, June 12 at 8:00 p.m.
According to NWS, some of the impacts are increasing in heat-related illnesses that include heat cramps, heat exhaustion, headaches, and vomiting.
Being exposed to high temperatures for long periods of time or engaging in vigorous activities in high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke especially if you are dehydrated.
Afternoon temperatures will rise up from 107 to 114 and overnight lows in the lower 80s.
The NWS has issued these precautionary/preparedness actions:
-Stay indoors and seek air-conditioned buildings. Drink water, more than usual, and avoid dehydrating alcoholic, sugary, or caffeinated drinks.
-Dress for the heat lightweight and light-colored clothing.
-Eat small meals and eat more often.
-Monitor those with a higher vulnerability to heat, including small children. Check in on family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly.
-If engaging in outdoor activity, take longer and more frequent breaks and avoid the hottest parts of the day.
-Never leave kids or pets unattended in cars. Public cooling shelters are available in some areas.
