Man arrested after attempting to smuggle meth taped to leg

A man suspected of smuggling methamphetamine taped to his legs was arrested by Border Patrol agents at the Highway 86 immigration checkpoint Tuesday night.

According to Customs and Border Protection, the arrest happened at around 10:10 p.m. A canine detection team alerted to a silver 2007 Nissan Murano, driven by an 18-year-old man. Agents referred the man to secondary inspection where they discovered packages strapped to the man’s legs.

Authorities examined the packages and found that the contents were consistent with characteristics of methamphetamine.

“These arrests highlight the importance of our checkpoints,” said (Acting) Assistant Chief Patrol Agent Miguel Garcia. “It also speaks to the outstanding and vigilant work that Border Patrol agents do on a daily basis.”

The methamphetamine discovered weighed 2.059 pounds and was estimated to be valued at $4,735.

The man, vehicle, and the narcotics were turned over to the Border Crimes Suppression Team.
