CBP officers arrest a man with outstanding warrant for rape

A 30-year-old Honduran national man was arrested Monday morning as he attempted to enter the United States at Port of Nogales.

The Office of Field Operations officers from the Dennis DeConcini Crossing say Alex Josue Mendez-Maldonado presented a Honduran birth certificate telling the officers he was seeking asylum.

Officers say they referred the man to the Passport Control Unit where they conducted record checks that led to the discovery of Mendez-Maldonado’s outstanding warrant for a rape charge out of New Orleans, La.

Mendez-Maldonado was turned over by officers to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office where he will await extradition to Lousiana, officers say.

According to officers, Mendez-Maldonado had previous arrests in Wisconsin for trespassing, and in Louisiana for resisting an officer, simple battery, and disturbing city council charges.
