Using produce as holiday decorations
It’s about time to start decorating for the holidays.
In this week’s Home Grown we learn from a local farmer’s wife how to decorate a Christmas tree using some non traditional decorations.
“We have a Yuma Grown tree, that’s a big part of the culture of our city and so most everything on this tree represents our agricultural heritage here,” Amanda Mellon said.
Have you ever considered using corn, cotton cabbage or lettuce to decorate for the holidays? Well, you may not be able to find these items down your average holiday isle at the store but you can certainly find them all over the desert southwest.
Mellon shows 13 On Your Side how to decorate a Christmas tree using these agriculture items.
“There is an actual Christmas tree under all of this beauty,” she said. “You can hardly see it, but the first thing you do is put up the Christmas tree and lights and then the next step after that would be to tuck in your garland and ribbon and in our case our garland ended up being corn so we have corn in there and have cotton garland that we wrapped around and then from there it is a lot of fun to start sticking things inside the tree and building it from there,” she explained.
Be sure to check out 13 On Your Side at 4 p.m. today to watch how we decorate in this way.
