Foothills library celebrates Mexico’s Independence Day

The Foothills library started an early celebration in honor of Mexico’s Independence.

Dozens in the Yuma community gathered at the Foothills library every year to celebrate Mexico’s Independence and learn about the country’s culture.

The celebrations consist of activities, videos of Mexico’s Independence, music, and yummy food for everyone to enjoy.

Spanish Outreach Representative, Ana Gomez, became a U.S. citizen three years ago. She said that the community really comes together for this event.

“Just to know about other people’s cultures in general. To learn about other people’s culture in general. And what’s happening around the world,” said Gomez.

A longtime resident of Yuma, Joy Farina, has traveled the world. She said there’s a deeper understanding of others when accepting one another.

“I think it expands our understanding of other people and our absolute realization that we add to our understanding and our comprehension of other people, and we add to our knowledge. Those are the important things. We should be accepting of others, they add to our culture as well as their own,” said Farina.

Military veteran in Yuma, Wendell Covin, said that it’s time to value where we all come from.

“It’s important to know where their heritage comes from. Whether it’s Mexican heritage, Hispanic, African American like me, Italian, Caucasian. It doesn’t matter. Mexican heritage right now being that were in Mexico independence, it is time for us to learn about other cultures. It is very important to learn where we all came from and where we stand for,” said Covin.

The library will continue their celebration of Mexico’s Independence tomorrow at Las Fiestas Patrias, located at the Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma. Gates for the event open at 5 p.m.
