New WACOG facility gives students a head start
The Western Arizona Council of Government (WACOG) is inviting parents and their children to learn the basic skills in time for kindergarten.
“I love to see families and children come in and leave happy-it makes my heart happy,” Teran said.
Diane Teran is the area manager for WACOG for Yuma and La Paz County and said ‘school readiness’ is the top priority.
“The kids have so much fun throughout the day. They learn, they play, they read numbers, letters, anything that gets them ready for school,” Teran added.
The learning facility accepts children as young as six months to five-years-old and keeps them on a tight curriculum. Students in the program learn numbers, shapes, colors, and sometimes even how to potty train.
Alejandra Monjarraz, an executive assistant for WACOG and who also has a child in the program, said she likes the routine her daughter goes through because she brings the ‘practice’ at home.
“They know they have to get up early, have breakfast, brush their teeth, wash their hands. Everything is just a part of life and I think it’s wonderful,” Monjarraz said.
WACOG is in partnership with the Yuma Elementary School District One and encourages anyone who is interested to take a guided tour at Gwenyth Ham Elementary School.
The new facility is currently the largest in Yuma County.
