How the homeless are dealing with the heat
Dealing with triple digit weather is nothing new for those that live in the desert southwest. For the homeless, it’s a day to day struggle finding somewhere to cool off.
Crossroads Mission, a non-profit shelter for men, women, and children in Yuma, sees an influx of people coming in to escape the scorching heat. The mission is open 24 hours a day and all you have to do it show up for assistance. They have water stations all throughout the shelter and they will give you bottles of water to take with you.
“We had two day[s], total heat exhaustion. One guy just had a heat stroke a couple days ago so he’s in here cooling down and he’s got to get back to his town. One of them lives in Quartzsite. These are individuals in-program and people that are homeless off the street,” said Barbara Rochester with Crossroads Mission.
For those that are not part of the Mission’s programs, they have a 10 day-in, 20 day-out policy. In the summer months, it’s not unusual for them to get up to 100 intakes a day.
