Extreme heat claims the life of a man near border
An undocumented immigrant died due to extreme heat after being left behind by smugglers Friday, said Border Patrol officials.
According to a press release, the man was found after a search was conducted by Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue agents. The man was left behind by smugglers after he became ill and was found unresponsive. Agents and medical professionals provided care but the man passed away.
El Centro Sector Border Patrol officials are warning of excessive heat due to the risks of heat-related illness or risk of death for those who cross illegally into the United States.
The National Weather Service in Phoenix issued an excessive heat warning this week. The affected areas include parts of southeast California, such as Blythe and El Centro.
Officials recommend to s tay indoors and seek air-conditioning buildings, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, dress for the heat with lightweight and light-colored clothing. If engaging in any outdoor activity, take longer and more frequent breaks and avoid the hottest parts of the day.
