San Luis resident dies in single-vehicle collision on I-8

A San Luis resident died Wednesday morning after being involved in a single-vehicle collision on the Interstate 8 westbound lanes, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Authorities have confirmed the identity of the victim as 54-year-old Antioco Contreras.

DPS says that a commercial vehicle hauling a tanker trailer was westbound on I-8 when it drifted into the median. The vehicle drove through the median and into the eastbound lanes, where it rolled over completely blocking traffic.

The commercial vehicle caught fire and the driver identified as a 54-year-old man, died at the scene.

The tanker trailer contained a small amount of diesel fuel.

As of now, eastbound I-8 is closed and traffic is being routed off at Exit 37 to Old Highway 80, then returned to I-8 at Exit 42/Tacna.

Eastbound Interstate 8 is closed due to a vehicle fire at milepost 39, near Tacna, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

All eastbound traffic must leave the highway at Exit 37, Avenue 36 E.

Traffic can take Old US 80 east to Avenue 40 E to re-enter the highway.

There is no estimated time to reopen the freeway . The westbound lanes are unaffected.
